If you had to choose between these two aircraft to fly, which would you choose: 


A) A vintage, rare (GA) aircraft that few have put their eyes on, let alone flown  


B) A brand new, state of the art (GA) aircraft right off the assembly line that few have put their eyes on, let alone flown?

I would go with A. Walking down the Vintage aircraft lines at AirVenture would be a good place to start. As a review pilot for a northeastern U.S. aviation newspaper, I have flown new Cirrus, Diamond, and Columbia (now Cessna) aircraft. They are great and very comfortable traveling machines. But fun to fly? Hardly. A checkout in a Cirrus is mostly learning how to program the glass panel, and then shortly after takeoff, you sit back and let it fly it. Who wants to make turns by turning a knob on the panel? The old stuff is a LOT more fun!

New. I love the evolution of GA. I won't miss steam gauges. I fly mostly point to point so ease and comfort are at a premium. I love knowing (or feeling) I can count on the plane to do its job without wondering if that "unusual" noise is something to worry about. I think after 1 hour in an antique, I would be done, but in a new SR22, for example, I would want to come back again and again.

This will sound like blasphemy, but I would choose B. I just sold my '52 Cessna 195, and I think the Beech Stagger Wing is probably the most beautiful plane I've ever seen. That said, although I would love to fly a vintage airplane on occasion, I don't think I care to own another one ... especially with a round engine. I can't get past the knowledge that some, if not many, of the parts keeping me airborne were made over 60 years ago. Everything has to fail sometime, and older just means its time is getting closer. I fly a modified Christen Eagle. I could see a Pitts S12 ... that would be awesome!

I believe I'd pick B and I'll tell you why.  I would choose, (I wish), a brand new Waco Super UP-7 and I'd have the best of both worlds!  Man, that would be living!

Antique original, Great Lakes 2T1-A with 100 hp upright Cirrus engine, like the one at my home airport in the 30s when I was bout 10 or 11! There are a ton of new, state of the art planes around, but very few, if any of the original Great Lakes with original engine! There was also an original Taper-Wing WACO, a Curtis Jr. 2 place with pusher Szekely engine, WACO RNF, "Bathtub" Aeronca C3, and others!!! I walked a 3 mile trip every weekend to get to the field with all those goodies!! Lee Robinson W. Palm Beach.

Personally, I'd be more apt to say "A"  and the aircraft would probably be an old Stearman 650.  The SEAT OF THE PANTS flying would be more appropriate for me as opposed to the modern aircraft equipped with the latest instrumentation imaginable.
